Welcome to the "Shoe Goddess Salon"
Never Underestimate the Power of...
"The Boot Factor."
Boots are always a big hit in the winter - and why shouldn't they be- they're sexy, fun, and in some ways even practical during the chilly winter months.
The look I've been loving? "Slouch Boots" - Boots that come to the knee or a bit lower in a soft leather or suede with that ooh so fetching "scrunch appeal." I'm wearing a pair in the photo above and get compliments on these boots every time I wear them from women of all ages - and men seem to like them as well!
This versatile look can be worn with jeans (of course) a long skirt (classic) -a short skirt or dress (ultra-sexy). The rule of thumb is the shorter the hem the higher the boot - this will keep your look proportionate. For the office, go with a fitted to the knee or just above the knee skirt in a quality material like wool or a wool blend and pair this with a skin hugging to the knee leather or suede boot for a "totally together" look.
Another Great Look: Uggs are still a hot item - yet, are very casual by design so pair them with jeans and your jean or cord skirts - they will not usually go with lighter weight materials like silk and rayon so please - keep the look true to what it was intended for - casual, fun, and sporty!
For the office: Try to avoid anything that resembles the "biker chick look" - which is boots coming above the knee - and or heavily embellished styles with decorative hardware.
The look one might sport for the "bar-scene" may also not be appropriate in the office - skirts that are too short with too much leg showing between the hem and the top of the boot. Of course, we are offering this "appropriate office attire"advice for women who are looking to get ahead in life - which is a totally different topic to cover. Check out our When in Doubt - Go with Toe-Cleavage entry for more info. on recommended shoe attire for the office environment.
The LOOK I can do without? ANKLE BOOTS with a short or medium length dress. Okay, perhaps if you're a celebrity you can wear those short "ankle boots" with a dress and get away with it - but please - for the rest of us, this look has a scary resemblance to the snow booties my grandmother wore in the 1980's - a boot just hitting your ankle with a dress is - well - just plain ugly in my opinion - it's out of proportion.
There is a place for these "shoe boots" and that's under boot cut jeans. Now you may be thinking why not with you're trendy slim leg jeans and the answer is this:
KEEP YOUR LOOK IN PROPORTION DARLINGS - Slim pants and a boot just grazing your ankle can create the "diaper effect" - which is to say your but will stick out (as if you are wearing a diaper) from all that "slimness" and appear out of proportion.
So what's the solution? Go with the LOOK I'm loving now mentioned above - a great slouch boot, or even a slim fitting to the knee boot will add a bit of width below the knee to balance out your bodacious booty - unless of course you like the look of "I'm sporting a diaper" then by all means where those ankle boots with your skin tight jeans - but you can't say you were not warned!
You can always wear a pair of great flats with your "skinny" leg jeans for that "I'm so cute and comfy" look. This is very casual look great for perusing the Farmers Market, catching a movie, or shopping with the gals.
When choosing colors for your boot collection think "practical and versatile" - black, taupe (goes with everything), brown - then you will always have a pair of boots to go with whatever your in the mood to wear.
If you have the basics covered and want to splurge - go for a metallic like bronze or silver, or even a rich, deep red or wine leather to add a pop of color and excitement to your look. (Be careful - bright or orange-red, and primary colors like blue leather can come across tacky and cheap looking). Also, try to find boots with a wide proportioned (2 inch) heel for maximum comfort - really, you can look good and be comfortable too - it just takes a bit of looking for the right styles.
